Department of Physics

The Department of Physics was established with Under Graduate Course in 1981.  On 2013, Department of Physics was upgraded into a Post Graduate department. Currently the department is supported with DST under FIST programme.
The department is now planning to get approval as a research department, affiliated to University of Kerala. We have a good research atmosphere. At present, he department constitutes five permanent faculty members including four PhD holders and one PDF holder.

• Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Physics
• Master of Science (MSc) in Physics

Infrastructure

The department has well equipped teaching learning infrastructures to meet the academic requirements of students. The  laboratory for the Under Graduate Course is equipped with instruments like Cathode Ray Oscilloscope, Spectrometer, Travelling Microscope, Bi Prism Apparatus, Function Generator, Ballistic Galvanometer etc. For Post Graduate Course, well equipped General Physics and Electronics lab facilities are made available. Michelson Interferometer, Hall Effect apparatus, He-Ne laser, apparatus for Ultrasonics, apparatus for Quinke’s method are some of the highlighted apparatus in the laboratory.
Further, research oriented equipments such as spectrophotometer, Dip coating unit, Analytical electronic balance, ellipsometer etc are also available in the department.The department offers facilities for project works and guidance to B.Sc and M.Sc students of the department.
As per the regulations of University of Kerala, the continuous assessments of students are being done on the basis of their attendance, marks scored in seminars and assignments, performance in test papers etc. Apart from the mid-term and model exams,  monthly test papers are conducted regularly.

Activities

• For supporting the academic development of students, the department has been conducting seminars and workshops on a regular basis for the last few years. The Faculty regularly participates in seminars/workshops and presents research papers and publishes them in research Journals.
• Along with curricular activities department also promotes the extra-curricular activities like NCC, performing arts etc.
• Various seminars have been conducted on a wide array of topics such as ‘Semiconductors’ by Prof. KG Gopinathan on 12-12-2002, ‘Physics and Yoga’ by Dr R Raveendran on 10-11-2003, ‘Fibre Optic Communication’ by Prof. PN Bhasi on 10-01-2004, ‘Awareness class on Computer Hardware and Software’ on 17-10-2004, ‘Quantum Mechanics’ by Prof. G Omanakuttan on 13-01-2005, ‘Edusat’ by Sri. VP Balagangaadharan on 7-09-2005, ‘Conducting Polymers’ by Dr. P Pradeep on 28-11-2006, ‘Natural Rubber Composites’ by Dr. Rosamma Alex on 28-11-2006, ‘An Introduction to Nanophysics’ by Dr R Raveendran on 11-01-2008 and ‘Mobile Communication’ by Sri. R Satheesan on 24-01-2011.
• As part of the Golden Jubilee year , the department organized a UGC sponsored National Seminar on Nanomaterials for Energy Applications (Convenor: Dr. Arun S. Prasad) from 7January 2016 to 8 January 2016.
• As part of ZEST 2016,a seminar series conducted on behalf of Golden Jubilee celebration, Dr. G. Subodh, Head, Department of Physics, University of Kerala and Dr. Krishnakumar, Assistant professor, Department of Physics, S. G. College, Kottarakkara made talks on various topics such as X-ray diffraction techniques, Holography etc.
• In connection with Ozone day celebrations of 2018, the department organized a National Seminar in association with KSCSTE which was inaugurated by Geetha M Nair, Scientist, SPL, VSSC, Thiruvananthapuam.

Achievements

• Several former students of the department had qualified different national competitive examinations and NET/JRF
• Dr SS Harilal, a former faculty member of the department is now working as the Head of the Department of Laser Physics in the University of California.
• Students of the department participating every year in several camps in connection with NCC, NSS etc. and representing different arts and sports events of state and national level.
• Mr Akash of BSc 2009-12 batch secured the second prize in English Essay Writing in the University Youth Festival 2010-11. He also bagged the fifth place for the same item at the All India Level.
• NCC Cadet, Mr Akshai of BSc 2016-19 batch participated International Cadet Exchange Programme hosted by India and he achieved 5 International awards from 3 countries (Kazakhstan,Singapore,Bangladesh)
• Lekshmi S Suraj of BSc 2017-20 batch secured second Akshara slogam in the University Youth Festival 2018-19.
• UGC Minor research Project on “Development of High Anisotropy Nanoferrites: A Pre-requisite for High Density Data Storage Media” was successfully completed by Dr. Arun S. Prasad as Principal Investigator.
• Several students of the department successfully completed their projects which were sponsored by KSCSTE, Govt. of Kerala under the guidance of Dr. Arun S. Prasad.
